I decided to start my story here, as this is when I noticed my first symptoms. However, really I think it all began much earlier. In the preceding few years, I went through a number of stressful life events including my husband losing his job at the same time as moving to a more expensive house, setting up our own small business, trying for kids, having two kids close together, money worries, working full-time 40 miles away whilst still running the business and trying to be there for the school run, and more money worries. Most significantly, only six weeks before the symptoms began, I lost a good friend suddenly and shockingly to breast cancer. This last one sent me to a dark place and although I have made a conscious decision to let it go, the shock and grief is still there.
The symptoms started with my hands ‘not working’; they felt slow and unresponsive, a bit like wearing gloves all the time. I went to the GP who scratched her head and told me to “See how it goes and come back in a month if it’s not better.” At this stage, I didn’t really take it too seriously.
